Chapter 8
Toby greeted them like long lost friends when Beau and Rick entered his office around nine the following morning. He took them into the back office, again locking the door, before handing them their driver’s licenses and social security cards. He also gave Beau two credit cards, one gold, one platinum, each with a high limit. Then he ran the one Beau had used the previous day, to pay the remainder of what was owed him.
Beau bit back a smile when he heard a small gasp and realized Rick had seen the amount, which was sizable—but well worth it as far as Beau was concerned.
“Do you have any money left?” Rick asked, as soon as they’d left Toby’s building.
“Yeah. I told you, I’m not wealthy, but I’m far from poor.”
“Working for…” Rick glanced around. “For the people you do must pay well.”
“It does,” Beau replied succinctly. “Now, let’s go to the bank, so I can open an account, and then we’ll see a man about an apartment.”
Beau opened the account, using his new name, transferring money from his numbered account in the Cayman Islands. Then it was on to the apartment building. An hour later, after filling out the requisite forms, and waiting for the manager to verify his information, Beau and Rick each had keys to #508 in Building Four. The rental fee included all utilities, which in itself made the place worth the price, and the complex had Wi-Fi included and was cable-ready.
“Next, furniture?” Rick asked.
“Yeah.” Beau checked his phone, finding a warehouse store that carried what they’d need at reasonable prices—and also delivered.
* * * *
“New in town?” the salesman who had greeted them when they came into the store asked, when Beau told him what they needed.
“I wish,” Beau replied sourly. “I just got divorced. I spent the last month living in a motel, until it was finalized. The bitch got everything except the shirt on my back—and our son. That was the tradeoff, but it was worth it.”
“Damn. Sorry, guy. Looks like your kid’s already made the decision on which sofa.”
Since Rick was waving to get Beau’s attention, he figured the man was right. With that settled, since Beau didn’t care which sofa it was, as long as it was comfortable, and not flowery, he and Rick spent the next half hour choosing other furniture. They ended up with two queen-sized beds, with mattresses, a table and chairs, two arm chairs, plus dressers and nightstands for their bedrooms. At the last minute, Rick realized they needed bookshelves, which were added to the order. Beau paid, using his new platinum card, then gave the salesman their address, with the man promising everything would be delivered between three and five that afternoon.
When they were back in the car, Beau suggested they eat lunch at the same place they’d had dinner the previous night. “That way you can talk with the manager about a job.”
The same woman was at the cashier’s desk. She saw Rick and immediately smiled and beckoned.
